As the end of the year approaches, we make plans and decisions for the coming year. Those who enjoy the written word set new goals and engage in reading challenges.
One may wonder why challenges are needed. But the answer is very simple. Not only will we make it easier to decide what to read, but we will also give ourselves the opportunity to discover new authors and books that may be hiding stories that will delight us.
Last week we suggested the Numbers Reading Challenge, and this week we have a new idea for you. Rainbow Reading Challenge, seven colors, seven books that have the given color in their titles.
You may have an idea of what you would include in this challenge. But if you can’t think of one, we have prepared three suggestions for each color of the rainbow.
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
If you want to know why this story is the Winner of Best Debut Goodreads Author (2015), then get ready to embark on a science fiction adventure that will amaze everyone. Especially members of the younger generation. An excellent choice for everyone who wants a little more fantasy, danger, and mystery until the very end.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Let’s join a quest for justice together with the main character of this book. The main character will put everything on the line and sacrifice everything he has just to reach the desired goal. But what are the dangers lurking along the way? Will he succeed?
Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier
A sixteen-year-old girl who possesses a rare time-traveling gene… Sounds like trouble already, doesn’t it? But if the said girl has no idea about it, and is completely unprepared to reveal her hidden power, then you know that you are well on your way to enjoying an unforgettable trip…
If you are interested, then take this suggestion of ours for the Rainbow Reading Challenge and enjoy one truly unforgettable read.
My Life in Orange by Tim Guest
It’s nice to also offer some ideas for those who enjoy non-fiction. This memoir/autobiography tells about life in communes created by and for followers of the Indian ‘guru’ Bhagwan. The cult as a phenomenon is interesting enough to make the effort to learn a little more about it, isn’t it?
Code Orange by Caroline B. Cooney
The main character is a bright student with a lack of motivation to try a little harder. But a strange situation forces him to face things he hadn’t even thought about before.
A bit of realistic fiction, mixed with a great deal of mystery and thriller elements is enough to keep your attention until the very end.
Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce
To make the suggestion list for the Rainbow Reading Challenge complete, we would also have to include a debut novel. An interesting thriller about a woman who seems to have everything she needs to be happy. A devoted husband, a sweet daughter, and a great career, but one unfortunate event changes everything. What will it take for Alison to save herself?
An excellent psychological thriller that will leave you without sleep.
The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elaine R. Hedges (afterword)
Postpartum depression is a normal phenomenon that many women face. Sometimes women ask for help and talk about the same thing, sometimes women are only silent sufferers who don’t ask for help.
A woman, a seemingly worried man, and a summer house bring numerous events that will make you think carefully about many things.
The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux
The list for the Rainbow Reading Challenge wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include at least one mystery. A quiet night is disturbed by the screams of a young woman.
But when the door is opened, she is lying bleeding and badly injured, and there is no one else in the room. What foul play is hiding behind all this?
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Three characters, three completely different stories, and the same danger that threatens to destroy them. As the troops slowly advance, our characters are forced to flee for their lives. War brings out the worst in us. What tests will these characters be subjected to? Which moral principles will survive and which will sink in the flood that the war causes?
The Green Mile by Stephen King
The Rainbow Reading Challenge wouldn’t be interesting if we didn’t include at least one suggestion written by the master of thrillers and horror stories. One prison filled with cruel prisoners, a new arrival who is the embodiment of the demon or some other kind??? What is hidden behind the mystery?
The Last Green Valley by Mark T. Sullivan
If you’ve read Beneath a Scarlet Sky, you know that the writer is one amazing storyteller when it comes to historical fiction.
One rash decision brings a lot of danger, and the clock is ticking. Does love have the power to overcome darkness, defeat danger, and triumph against the odds?
Green Rider by Kristen Britain
A most ordinary day can turn into the most extraordinary life experience that brings changes that we may not be ready for. Karigan G’ladheon happens to be in the wrong place, which might be the right place and meets the green rider. One dying plea, one promise, and her entire destiny changes… She becomes the mysterious messinger and a a mark appears on her back…. Let’s discover more in the book!
The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
This book is an excellent choice for young readers. It is an interesting fantasy that takes you on an adventurous literary journey.
Our heroine discovers an ancient magic inside herself and from that part, the whole story begins. With a sophisticated writing style and interesting characters, this book is a great choice for an interesting reading afternoon.
Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1 by Kazue Kato, John Werry (Translator)
It would be nice to include a graphic novel in our rainbow reading challenge list, right? Our pick is The Blue Exorcist, a book full of adventurous spirit and enough mystery to hold the attention of fans of this genre until the very end…
Blue Jewelry by Katharina Winkler
Blue jewelry is a book based on a true story that will make you angry and upset. Being a woman in Anatolia is not easy at all. Without the right to an opinion, without a voice, without protection…
Adorned only with her solitude and the blue jewelry, every woman bears the markings of the male power.
It is an excellent choice for all readers who dare to step out of their comfort zone a little.
Indigo Ridge by Devney Perry
Let’s throw in a reading choice for all those contemporary romance fans out there. This is a charming love tale set in a small town. One unplanned one-night stand can have quite awkward consequences, especially in a small town where secrets simply don’t exist…
Few random meetings, a bit of angst, one very unexpected attraction, and a dose of danger, what more could you want?
If you are interested in what happened, then do not miss this enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance.
Indigo by Beverly Jenkins
A classic historical romance that will take you back to a time when different rules and laws ruled. A bit of mystery and a dash of black history are very skillfully woven into the story. And someone might say that the harsh and painful realities of slavery cannot be mixed with romance, but this author shows that not only can they, but together they create an even more emotional and powerful literary experience.
Violets Are Blue by James Patterson
Crime lovers have a great choice for this rainbow reading challenge. The famous detective Alex Cross will have to face a really serious opponent while investigating a series of bizarre murders with elements of the supernatural. What are the fears that will torture the astute detective? Join him on his quest and learn all the secrets hidden in this gripping story.
Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey
Speaking of supernatural powers and abilities, it’s time to include one such story in our Rainbow Reading Challenge. Our heroine Violet does not believe in ghosts and wants to distance herself from all those supernatural beliefs. But one brutal murder and an ultra-persistent ghost force her to recognize her unique gift.
But the gift doesn’t come with an instruction manual, does it? What will happen as Violet tries to figure out how it works?
The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd
Another historical story in our Rainbow Reading Challenge. A mixture of danger and intrigue, hidden friendships and ambitions…
A young girl with a bright mind and great ideas and an unusual friendship that brings both pleasure and great danger…
The Violet Keystone by Garth Nix
If you’ve heard of the Seventh Tower series by author Garth Nix, then you’d assume this is an ultra-fun and unusual installment that offers a really great literary experience.
Tal and Milla are in unprecedented danger, war is raging and power is hiding out there somewhere. What will happen until they realize that the key to everything is in The Seventh Tower?
How do you like our reading challenge idea?
