Sometimes the most beautiful things in life come from the most unexpected things we find somewhere along the way. Things that we do not even know we need, that we miss in our lives, in our life story. One such story is told by Heather McCollum in her latest novel The Highlander’s Unexpected Proposal. It is the first instalment of what looks to be a really nice series.

Quite by chance they meet each other, that lady in trouble, and her brave savior – the powerful Highlander. Unbeknownst to them, both are the perfect solution to the other’s problems, a blessed answer to their prayers. They move away from each other just to look for each other and find solace in each other. She, pressed by the difficult fate and the drunken father, he, pressed by the weight of the great responsibility towards the oath, stand next to each other and pledge themselves to each other, bonded by a holy union. Both of them with their secrets, in search of a peaceful life and a better tomorrow … And will there be a happy ending for them, once all the secrets are revealed and all the masks fall off? Will the feelings that awaken be enough to overcome the curse or will it be their end? Will fear succeed in quenching that passion that burns their bodies?

The Highlander’s Unexpected Proposal by Heather McCollum does not focus only on the romantic part, but has traces of betrayal, honor, the price of true friendship, the status of women …. many elements intertwined in this story is what makes it very interesting and attractive. It has a very well thought-out idea and premise, maybe not quite historically accurate, but definitely interesting enough to hold the readers’ attention until the very end. The narration is not bad, although parts of the story are somehow too messy and not given enough emphasis. The start was really excellent and captivating. On the other hand, I really would have liked a more detailed and elaborated explanation of the end chapters, they felt somehow rushed and abrupt. I would also love to have an epilogue, and maybe there will be glimpses of their story in the next installments of the series.

Lark and Adam are two characters who are simply so cute, brave and strong enough to overcome all obstacles and all prejudices. He is well portrayed as a worthy and noble man, with views that go beyond stereotypes and prejudices. Cruel and powerful, but gentle enough to be able to arouse the most tender feelings in your loved one. And the connection and the chemistry between them is absolutely sizzling. The supporting characters are well presented and contribute to the overall story to a great extent

To be perfectly honest, the stories of the powerful chiefs of the Scottish Highlands are my weakness. And no matter how much time passes, no matter how long and overloaded my TBR list is, I always find time for a story that brings the romance of the Highlands. If you are also interested in spending some time, reading about a sexy Highlanders, pirates, brave heroines, curses, betrayals….then you should definitely read The Highlander’s Unexpected Proposal by Heather McCollum.
