As someone who has occasionaly kept up with the twists and turns of the British royal family’s saga, I was thrilled to get my hands on Spare by Prince Harry. The buzz surrounding the book’s release was palpable, with millions of copies sold and translations in over 15 languages within the first month alone. I was particularly excited to listen to the audio version, with Harry himself as the narrator, adding a unique and personal touch to the experience. And let me tell you, I was hooked from the very first chapter.
To be honest, I wasn’t always Harry’s biggest fan, especially after all the drama that’s unfolded in recent years. So, I approached this book with a healthy dose of skepticism. But I also wanted to keep an open mind and give him a fair chance to change my opinion.
One thing that stood out to me about Harry’s memoir was how refreshingly honest and candid he was. He held nothing back, sharing intimate details about his life that I never would have expected. From losing his virginity to experimenting with drugs and alcohol, to his time serving in the British Army and killing 25 Taliban during his military operations in Afghanistan, Harry bares it all.
But it wasn’t just the shocking revelations that captured my attention. Harry’s account of his mental health struggles, including his battles with panic attacks and anxiety, was truly touching. As someone who has dealt with mental health issues myself, I found his openness about the topic both brave and important. It’s not every day that we see public figures, especially members of the royal family, being vulnerable and discussing their mental health challenges.
Another aspect of Spare by Prince Harry that piqued my interest was the behind-the-scenes look at the royal family. Harry pulls back the curtain on what goes on in the palace and shares some troubling anecdotes about his relationships with his family members. His descriptions of the conflicts and tensions between his father, stepmother, and brother were particularly eye-opening. It made me realize that the harmonious relationships we see in public are often just for show, and the truth behind the scenes may be much more complicated.
Without any doubt, Harry sheds light on the conflicts and tensions in the British royal family and what goes on behind closed doors. He alludes that the smiles and supposedly harmonious relationships shown in public are sometimes far from the truth. He shares several anecdotes that capture his troubled relationships with his father, stepmother, and brother, as well as his observations on the relationships between other members of his own family.
For example, he reveals the stark contrast between the relationship his father, Prince Charles, had with Camilla compared to the relationship between his brother, Prince William, and his wife, Kate Middleton. He also shares some troubling events, such as William’s physical attack on him and the family’s refusal to help him and his wife, Meghan Markle, deal with the British media. Finally, he shares his perspective on their ouster from the palace, which he feels was unjustified.
However, as much as I enjoyed the book, there were moments when I questioned Harry’s intentions. Some of the more personal details he shared, such as his drug use and sexual experiences, felt gratuitous and unnecessary. It almost seemed like he was trying too hard to be relatable or gain sympathy, and it came across as slightly insincere.
While I found some of Harry’s revelations shocking and eye-opening, I also couldn’t help but wonder about the other side of the story. After all, there are always two sides to every story, and I’m pretty sure that we won’t get to know the other side in this case. It seems to me that the British royal family will refrain from commenting on Harry’s book, so we will probably never know what is true and what is not. At the end of the day, Harry is sharing his perspective on events, which may not always coincide with objective reality. While I can agree with him on some things, there were also parts of the story that I absolutely disagreed with.
Furthermore, while I empathize with the pain and regret Harry felt after his mother’s death, there were times when I felt like he was using it as an excuse for his wrong choices and actions. It’s essential to take responsibility for our actions, no matter how difficult our circumstances may be, and at times, Harry seemed to struggle with this.
Overall, I found Spare by Prince Harry to be a fascinating and thought-provoking read. His unique perspective on the royal family is both engaging and enlightening, and whether you agree with him or not, it’s impossible to deny his courage in sharing his story. If you’re a fan of the British royal family, or if you’re interested in celebrity memoirs, I would definitely recommend giving this book a chance. Just keep in mind that it’s only one person’s perspective, and the truth may be more complicated than we know.
