***My Review****
Historical, swoon-worthy, and action-packed… You’ve Got Plaid by Eliza Knight is a terrific pick-me-up for everyone who enjoys historical fiction. It is based on several facts and actual events and includes stories about strong women, honorable men, intense desire, and love as a remedy for all ailments.
Our heroine, who we first encounter as a little child, grows up to be a woman willing to risk her skin, her life, and anything else necessary to experience true freedom. Because of her propensity to materialize out of thin air, she is known as the Phantom. Life gave her everything she needed, including remarkable intellect, resourcefulness, and the ability to comprehend others, persuade them, and flee. Until he showed there, the strong warrior who with just one look stirs up illicit thoughts and compels her to tell her truths, she also knew how to love sincerely, desire, and hope…
Clan rivals who are now allies He and she both struggled with the unpleasant emotions, yet each hug brings solace and security that more and more people are drawn to it. Each kiss brings both anxiety and hope. Can they, however, expect enduring love? When everything around you is destroyed, when a parent turns against his son, when brothers turn against brothers, when there is war……
Even though we don’t always agree with Fiona’s choices and actions, she manages to win us over with her attractiveness and admirable character attributes from a young age. I must admit that I detested her inflexibility and intransigence. She can stand up for herself in that patriarchal culture thanks to her cunning and bravery. Being a royal courier during those times was not easy, but she excels by switching positions and opportunities as required.
The character of Brogan Grant, the strong warrior marred by his past and the bastard son who must struggle for his position, perfectly embodies the gender stereotype of the period. He presents a challenge for our heroine as she struggles to stay in her role despite his conviction that women belong at home. But at the same time, I am in awe of his tolerance, comprehension, commitment, and concern. He was presented as a natural leader, but I didn’t notice that quality. A swoon-worthy hero is a ferocious warrior with a touch that soothes and heals.
And the connection between them is so strong that it is impossible to ignore it, regardless of whether they are arguing, ignoring one another, making jokes, or blazing with fury. She is a fiery rebel who can handle herself in perilous circumstances. He has trouble letting go of his preconceived beliefs and expectations of women, which is starkly in contrast to Fiona, who is fearless and self-reliant. Although they don’t agree on everything, they are incredibly attracted to one another, and their chemistry is great! This novel won’t let you down with some seriously sexy scenes.
I must add mention that the author’s handling of the historical information in the book as well as the breadth of the research made it challenging for readers to distinguish between fact and fiction. Her writing is incredibly detailed, captivating, full of insightful conversation, and has just the right amount of comedy. There are no dull moments throughout the entire book because of the well-developed and expertly-paced plot.
Part historical fiction, part spy thriller, part love story….
All in all, You’ve Got Plaid by Eliza Knight is a completely engrossing tale that will have you clamoring for more. This book is fantastic for any history-romance reader because it has incredible writing, and love story combined with historical events from the war, memories, loss, and hope, but it also has a mystery that keeps you turning the pages, ready to find out what happens next.
