Laws of Wrath by Eriq La Salle

*** My Review ***

Eriq La Salle’s “Laws of Wrath” is a standout crime thriller that delivers suspense, complex characters, and a gripping plot. From the very first page, the author hooks the reader with a gruesome murder that sets the tone for the rest of the book. The story follows lead detective Phee Freeman and his partner Quincy Cavanaugh as they investigate a series of ritualistic murders that become increasingly complex and twisted.

NYPD detectives Phee Freeman and Quincy Cavanaugh are no strangers to the darker side of the city, but when they are called to the scene of a brutal murder, Freeman’s world is turned upside down. It quickly becomes apparent that the victim is his own older sibling, adding a deeply personal element to the investigation.

As Freeman and Cavanaugh begin to piece together the clues, they soon realize that this is no ordinary murder case. The killings bear all the hallmarks of a Satanic cult, with ritualistic elements and a disturbing level of precision. With similar murders popping up throughout the city, the detectives team up with FBI agent Janet Maclin to track down the perpetrators before they can strike again. But will they be able to stop the evil?

Reading this book was a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving me both enthralled and disturbed. The plot was so engaging that I found myself unable to put it down, eager to see how the story would unfold. However, at times the graphic language and brutal atrocities left me feeling uneasy and appalled. The author’s vivid and unsettling descriptions were a source of discomfort for me as a reader. But let’s start with my thoughts..

La Salle’s writing style is sharp and precise, with vivid descriptions that bring the crimes and investigations to life. His attention to detail and research into the inner workings of a police investigation add a layer of authenticity to the story that is both impressive and engaging. The author’s ability to create visceral images of the crimes and investigations immerses the reader in the story, making it difficult to put the book down.

One of the standout elements of “Laws of Wrath” is the depth and complexity of the characters. Phee Freeman is a fascinating and deeply flawed character whose personal connection to the case adds an emotional depth to the story. His partner Quincy Cavanaugh is a sharp-witted and loyal friend who provides a perfect foil to Phee’s impulsive and often reckless behavior. The supporting cast of characters, including Phee’s estranged father Clay and FBI agent Maclin, are equally well-developed and add nuance to the story.

The author’s mastery of descriptive language is evident in the way they paint a complete picture of each character, using colorful and evocative imagery to bring them to life. From their physical appearance to their mannerisms and speech patterns, the reader is given a complete understanding of who these characters are and what makes them tick.

The inclusion of a Satanic cult in the story adds a dark and unsettling element to the already suspenseful plot, heightening the tension and intrigue for readers. La Salle’s deft handling of this controversial topic is commendable, as he manages to create a sense of foreboding and unease without veering into gratuitous or sensationalistic territory.

As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn deeper into the world of the cult, with its rituals, beliefs, and hidden agendas. La Salle expertly builds the suspense, keeping the reader guessing about the true nature of the cult and its ultimate goals. While some aspects of the plot may be predictable, the overall experience of reading the book is a wild and thrilling ride.

I have to say that this book was a bit too violent for my taste. While I did enjoy the fast-paced story and some of the twists and turns, the extreme violence was hard to stomach at times. The graphic descriptions of the murders and the brutality of the killer left me feeling uneasy and disturbed. I appreciate the author’s ability to create such vivid and visceral imagery, but for me, it was just too much. I had to take breaks while reading the book to gather myself before diving back in. That being said, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, twisting, and very violent thriller, then “Laws of Wrath” might be right up your alley.

If you’re a fan of crime novels and can handle a healthy dose of violence, “Laws of Wrath” is an excellent choice. Eriq La Salle has crafted a gripping story that delves deep into the darker side of the human psyche. With complex characters, a twisting plot, and vivid descriptions that bring the crimes and investigations to life, this book is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. However, be warned that the violence and graphic descriptions may not be suitable for everyone. If you can stomach it, though, “Laws of Wrath” is a must-read for anyone who loves a good crime thriller.
