****My Review****
After reading several books from other genres, I kind of wanted to read a good thriller. Scrolling through the list of available titles, the author’s name immediately caught my eye. Unusual and somehow quite attractive at the same time. The cover was good, too.
First, I must say that author is new to me and that was an extra incentive for me to get down to reading Devil’s Way right away. And even though it’s a series of books, I could follow the story with absolutely no problem.
A life with a dose of danger is her everyday life. But a close encounter with death will take our heroine to a hospital bed. And hospitals can be places of new unexpected acquaintances and friendships, right?
People share many truths and problems inside hospital rooms. Grief shared is grief halved. And everyone needs understanding and support.
Sharing a hospital room and sharing the pain is what brings Kate and fellow patient Jean together. One has a huge problem and a hole in her heart, and the other is capable enough to try and solve the problem.
The disappearance of Jean’s nephew 11 years ago is something she can neither accept nor come to terms with. And her sad story is enough motivation to bring Kate back to the field.
After fully recovering, Kate throws herself into the case, along with her partner Tristen, of course. They go to the scene of the disappearance, following the scant clues that add even more confusion. But one clue leads to another. The disappearance leads to a connection with a murder of a social worker.
The threads unravel a little, then tangle further. The investigation brings answers but also opens new questions. Is the boy missing or maybe the police’s guesses were correct after all? What truth is hiding behind all the chaos? Will this duo of investigators manage to find out the truth?
Disappearance investigation cases are very intriguing to me, and if they contain a lot of twists and turns and maximum suspense, even better.
Devil’s Way by Robert Bryndza was just like that. Although the beginning was somehow dragged out, as the story slowly developed, I also managed to get fully invested in the story.
The writing style is perfectly adapted to the topic, clear without dramatization or unnecessary detailing. Kate and Tristan as partners are quite compatible and interesting to follow. Perhaps for a better understanding, it would be nice to have read the previous parts as well, just to be able to understand their personal growth and development and complexity. But honestly, it wasn’t a big problem for me either.
Although the subject matter is very upsetting at times, I must admit that the setting is very atmospheric and quite descriptive. At times you feel that you are right there.
Even though some of the twists and turns were quite predictable, or at least seemed that way, I wasn’t very sure. That’s why I tried to read faster, to understand if I predicted correctly.
An excellent choice for all those readers who want to spice up their reading with enough mystery and numerous twists and turns. Devil’s Way by Robert Bryndza is an excellent thriller that will make you eagerly await the next installment of the series.
