***My Review***
As a fan of historical romances, I couldn’t help but be taken in by the stunning cover. And the title itself conjures up images of a lovely love voyage amidst the waves of the past and recollections.
Mrs. Rutley’s finishing school provides Luke Bannerman, our captain with refuge from the storm. Ruth Lockhart realizes that as his wife, this guy would fulfill her aspirations of adventure, and she begs him to wait two years before she may leave school.
Ruth is excitedly expecting the fulfillment of her hopes after 18 months of correspondence. His final letter, though, threatens to end her aspirations. Ruth is determined to learn why.
After a horrible shipwreck that takes away everything he ever wanted, our captain tormented by the past slips into a pit of grief. A shipwreck that would compel him to abandon all he once held dear, including the golden-haired girl who captivated his heart… Bitter, lonely, and filled with remorse…
However, life had other plans…
Alcohol is the captain’s only means of getting through the day. He has the responsibility of learning the truth behind the passing of Mrs. Rutley’s husband while working for the Bow Street Runners. Ruth is aware that Mrs. Rootley is not a murderer despite the charges to the contrary. She has to seek down the true murderer so she can reorient her commander.
However, life had other plans…
Ruth is aware that, despite her desire for a second chance, getting her captain back could prove to be more costly than she can bear. Will they eventually be able to see the end of the tunnel?
As a reader of historical romance, I was quite happy with this read! Captain of Second Chances by Jennifer Monroe not only featured a nautical aesthetic and a captain love interest, but it also had a well-thought-out and crafted narrative. And the plot itself was as light and refreshing as a glass of cool lemonade on a hot day.
A straightforward, readable, and fascinating read that neither burdens nor require the reader to contemplate or dive into thought.
The characters were realistic enough and solidly developed. Furthermore, they continued to develop and grow during the novel. Certain sections bordered on realms of reality, and I found myself rolling my eyes.
Both of the main characters’ points of view are represented in the conversation, which is well-written. A close-knit group of friends who have formed a “found” family to support them in life has been masterfully brought together in another novel by Ms. Monroe. The story’s fundamental theme is how to stand with integrity, look to the future with optimism, and choose to love your family.
Although the murder investigation provided excitement to Captain of Second Chances by, I expected much more detail about the couple’s thrilling exploits following this point, which did not occur. The ending felt hurried and afterthought, leaving me disappointed, although it may just be me.
There were, however, enough twists and turns to retain your attention until the finish, as well as enough details to allow you to experience the entire tale on a little higher level.
A recurring character from past stories performs an unexpected and startling gesture that impacts the result for others. The issue emerges when you haven’t read the prior novels, resulting in a lack of context and misunderstanding.
Captain of Second Chances by Jennifer Monroe was charming, but full of bumps on the road; those that don’t detract from the happily ever after, but simply add to its allure.
If you think you’ll enjoy a love tale about a troubled captain and a very powerful young girl who will not take no for an answer, then Captain of Second Chances by Jennifer Monroe should be on your TBR list.
