***My Review***

“Behind Closed Doors” by B.A. Paris is a psychological thriller that delves deep into the complexities of an abusive relationship. The story follows Grace and Jack, a couple who appear to have the perfect life – they are wealthy, good-looking, and live in a beautiful home. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that there is much more going on beneath the surface.

I have read my fair share of psychological thrillers, but “Behind Closed Doors” by B.A. Paris stands out as one of the most uncomfortable and unsettling reads I have encountered in a long while. I was drawn in from the first chapter where Jack and Grace host a dinner party for friends. From the outset, it is clear that something is not quite right about their relationship. The way they interact with each other, the way they behave towards their guests, everything about them is just too perfect, too rehearsed, too artificial.

As the story unfolds, we learn more about Jack and Grace’s relationship, and the reality is far from what they would have people believe. Jack is a master manipulator, charming and charismatic on the outside, but controlling and abusive behind closed doors. Grace is his victim, trapped in a relationship that is both physically and emotionally abusive. Paris’s portrayal of the effects of emotional and psychological abuse is chilling, and the reader is given insight into the mind of both the abuser and the victim.

“Behind Closed Doors” by B.A. Paris expertly jumps between the past and present, providing a deeper insight into why Grace fell for Jack in the first place and how she found herself in her current situation. At first glance, Jack seems like the perfect husband.

He is successful, charming, and attentive. However, as soon as Grace and Jack are married, his true colors are revealed. He is manipulative, cruel, and controlling. Paris expertly portrays the complexity of Jack’s character, as he is able to maintain a facade of being a successful lawyer, good friend, and wonderful husband to everyone except Grace.

Throughout the book, the reader is given a glimpse into Grace’s life, and the fear and panic she experiences as she tries to navigate her abusive relationship with Jack. Paris expertly conveys the futility of Grace’s situation, leaving the reader emotionally drained as they witness her struggle against the abuse. The vivid portrayal of Grace’s emotions and her torment make the story all the more harrowing.

One of the most striking things about this book is Paris’s writing style. She creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense that keeps the reader engaged throughout the entire book. The pacing is perfect, with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep the story moving forward.

The character development in the book is exceptional. Grace is a character that readers will quickly become invested in. As the story progresses, we see her transform from a victim to a survivor. The way Paris portrays the effects of emotional and psychological abuse is chilling, and the reader is given insight into the mind of both the abuser and the victim.

Jack, the abuser in the story, is a fascinating character. Paris portrays him as charming and charismatic, which makes it easy to see why Grace fell for him in the first place. However, as the story progresses, we see the true extent of his cruelty and manipulation. Jack is a character that readers will love to hate, and the tension between him and Grace is palpable throughout the book.

One of the things I appreciated about “Behind Closed Doors” is that it’s not just a typical thriller. While the story is suspenseful and engaging, it also raises important questions about the nature of love, power, and control in relationships. Paris’s portrayal of the power dynamics between Jack and Grace is masterful, and it provides a powerful commentary on the dangers of abusive relationships.

One of the things that make “Behind Closed Doors” stand out is the way it explores the psychology of abuse. Paris delves deep into the mind of both the abuser and the victim, showing how complicated and nuanced these relationships can be. She portrays the way that an abuser can manipulate and control their victim, making it difficult for them to leave the relationship. This aspect of the book is both chilling and informative, and it adds depth to the story.

Another important theme that the book addresses is the idea of appearances versus reality. From the outside, Jack and Grace’s life appears perfect. They have a beautiful home, a successful career, and a seemingly loving relationship. However, as the story unfolds, we see that their life is far from perfect. The book serves as a powerful reminder that things are not always as they seem.

The ending of “Behind Closed Doors” is satisfying, but it also leaves room for reflection and discussion. It’s a book that will stick with you long after you finish reading it. The themes and issues it raises are important, and it’s a story that needs to be told.

However, it should be mentioned that some readers may find the subject matter of emotional and psychological abuse too distressing or triggering. The book does not shy away from the graphic details of abuse and the effects it has on Grace. Some may find this too difficult to read, and it’s important for readers to prioritize their own mental health and well-being.

Additionally, some readers may find the character of Jack to be too one-dimensional. While he is portrayed as a complex character with a facade of charm and success, his abusive nature is unrelenting and at times predictable. This lack of depth may leave some readers feeling unsatisfied.

Lastly, the pacing of the book may be a concern for some readers. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, switching between past and present. While this adds depth to the story, it can also be confusing and slow the pace of the book at times.

In conclusion, “Behind Closed Doors” is a must-read for anyone who loves a good psychological thriller. It’s a gripping and thought-provoking book that will keep you up late into the night, unable to put it down. Paris’s writing style is exceptional, and the characters are well-developed and complex. The story is both suspenseful and informative, providing a powerful commentary on the dangers of abusive relationships.
