***My Review***

“A Match in the Making” by Jen Turano is an enjoyable and entertaining novel that will leave readers feeling happy and satisfied. The story follows Miss Gwendolyn Brinley, a young woman who accepts a temporary paid companion position for the Newport summer season, thinking it will be an amusing way to spend the summer in America’s most exclusive town. However, her summer turns out to be anything but amusing when her employer unexpectedly asks her to take on the role of assistant matchmaker.

The book offers a refreshing take on the typical romance novel. While the primary theme of the novel centers around matchmaking, the author, Jen Turano, skillfully interweaves light emotions and romance for our main couple, Miss Gwendolyn Brinley and Walter.

What makes this book stand out is its unique approach to developing the relationship between Gwendolyn and Walter. Unlike other romance novels that tend to rely on overly sentimental and emotional narratives, A Match in the Making adopts a more nuanced and mature approach to romance.

Instead of focusing on physical attraction or lust, Turano takes her time to build a strong foundation of friendship between the two characters. This approach is refreshing and adds a layer of complexity to the storyline, making it an excellent read for both teens and pre-teens alike (depending on the family’s views regarding romance novels).

As Gwendolyn and Walter begin as acquaintances and friends, the author allows the characters’ personalities to shine through, showcasing their unique quirks and traits. This emphasis on character development creates an immersive and engaging reading experience that is both charming and relatable.

Gwendolyn, the independent and spirited heroine, brings a new dimension to the story. Her strong-willed nature and no-nonsense attitude make her a standout character, and her interactions with other characters are entertaining and witty.

Walter, the swoon-worthy hero, is equally compelling, with his journey from being a distant father to a loving one. The transformation is gradual and realistic, providing an authentic portrayal of a father who learns to appreciate the importance of a loving marriage.

Turano’s attention to detail is another strength of the book. The author’s in-depth research on the time period is evident in the vivid descriptions of the clothing, architecture, and social customs of the wealthy elite in Newport. These details are immersive and transport the reader to a bygone era, adding depth and richness to the storyline.

Another aspect of “A Match in the Making” that deserves recognition is the humor. Turano has a gift for crafting witty dialogue and situational humor that will have readers laughing out loud. The various misadventures that Gwendolyn finds herself in are both entertaining and endearing, and the interactions between her and her new friends are particularly amusing.

Upon reaching the conclusion of this book, it became apparent that the pacing had somewhat slowed down, and the plot progression appeared somewhat forced. While the majority of the narrative flowed seamlessly and propelled forward with great momentum, the final few chapters seemed to lack the natural propulsion that had been present throughout the preceding sections.

It must be noted, however, that this particular piece of literature is more heavily steeped in what some may describe as “fluff,” or elements of the story that are purely enjoyable for their light-hearted and entertaining nature. This, in turn, makes it the ideal choice for a leisurely beach read, providing a delightful escape from the cold and dreary surroundings of a Canadian winter.

In its entirety, the book contains all of the quintessential hallmarks of a true Jen Turano masterpiece. Her signature wit and humor shine through in every page, creating a whimsical and amusing historical romance that is sure to delight readers from start to finish.

Overall, “A Match in the Making” is a delightful mix of romance, humor, and mystery that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. A book that will appeal to fans of historical fiction, romantic comedy, and mystery. The characters are well-drawn, the setting is vividly described, and the humor is genuinely funny.

With its irresistible combination of lighthearted humor and heartwarming romance, “A Match in the Making” is a true literary gem that is not to be missed.
